How to write a press release and engage with the media

Overview

Cost: £199.00 - £299.00

Most press releases never get read past the first line. Journalists delete them in seconds, not because the story isn't good, but because it's written the wrong way, sent to the wrong person, or pitched with no thought for what they actually need.

This half day, live online course will change that.

I'm Sara McCracken, FCIPR, a Chartered PR practitioner with more than 20 years' experience across environment, health, education, politics and the charity sector. I've led award winning campaigns, including the Great Big Green Week 2025 campaign, which achieved over 60 million in media reach and won a CIPR Excellence Award, and I've spent two decades helping organisations understand what actually gets a journalist's attention.

On this course, you'll learn how to:

  • spot a genuinely newsworthy story within your own organisation
  • structure a press release that's clear, concise and built to be used
  • choose the right spokesperson and the right moment to issue it
  • get your release signed off and out the door without delays
  • pitch to journalists in a way that gets a response, not silence

We'll also be joined by a working journalist as guest speaker, sharing an honest, insider view of what lands on their desk, what gets binned, and how to build a stronger working relationship with the media.
